Queenstown: Jetboat spin offers unexpected thrills
Sometimes there are unexpected things - as you find your feet in an icy river in what was supposed to be a relatively dry jetboat tour - which is a memorable trip.
Dart River Jet Safaris brochure describes the trip as a "journey into the desert exhilarating jetboat, complete with jet spins exciting." He went on to say that we would "navigate through the constantly changing deep channels of the food by glaciers Dart River braided river system, with your experts jetboat driver stops to highlight and discuss points of interest that make this region's unique natural and cultural significance. "
He does not mention that sometimes the channels are so shallow that the boat ran aground and everyone must abandon ship. While the prospect might not attract many tourists, but in my experience, it adds to the fun.
We were about halfway through the hike where we got stuck. We had already gone up the river virgin - which winds through the spectacular Mt Aspiring National Park - and were returning to the head of Lake Wakatipu when our driver stopped to show us a nice little pool nestled on the side.
To enter the pool we slowly navigated our way down the shallow river - an impressive feat since we were only a few inches of water after leaving the main river. Once there we all oohed and aahed at the natural beauty of the turquoise pool and the beautiful surrounding bush. But when we tried to head back we had trouble.
Our driver knew immediately that we were stuck. The rest of us thought we had got in all right so there must be a way out. But we were really grounded.
With no other options, the pilot asked for help and offered to carry us all through the rocks of the bush. It was only about two steps from the boat, with a tourist girl on his back, when the plan went to the custard and they both ended up in the water.
After that I decided to roll up my jeans and jump in - with my boots still - and make my way to the bank. When I looked back I saw all the other tourists waiting hesitating in front of the boat - they were not too keen on getting wet - so I waded towards the driver and so we helped them to through Riverstones.
