Impressions of the Rainbow Family gathering

July 10 Daily News editorial

With its tie-dyed characteristic clothing, long hair and relaxed attitudes, the age of 60 years may seem like a relic of the distant past. But a big dose of movement against recently visited the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Officials estimated that up to 20,000 people attended the Rainbow Family of Living Light Gathering in and around Skookum Meadow.

True, the hippies - or at least people who want to act like them for a week or two - never went away.

The Rainbow Fam was not easy to stereotype a group, ranging from professionals who wanted a break from their city jobs for homeless young people who appreciated and accepting free meals.

The gathering brought a mixture of memories of the late 60's - yes, some of us remember what was happening.

The good: Daily News reporter Tony Lystra, who camped overnight at Skookum Meadow, said he was upset when a stranger smiled and said, "Welcome home I love you.".

People were serious about creating community among strangers. It was also a theme in the 60's, when leafing through a journey on a highway seemed safer and sometimes led to new friendships.

The barter economy in place at Skookum Meadow was also refreshing, if unsustainable for a long period of time. Apparently free food sounds good, too, if we wonder how a group that professes to have no formal structure organized delivery of supplies and food preparation for the 20K.

The rally was a boost for the local economy. The store owner told a reporter Cougar Seattle Times, he sold $ 55 000 in addition to soft drinks, water and produce at the event.

The bad: Thirty officers forest law enforcement patrolling the areas, in one case, by pulling on a blue school bus for failing to use a flash - then searching the bus for marijuana.

It was a flashback less desirable to the 60's, when research improper "hippie van" has led to court decisions against profiling. We doubt a platform for hunting get pulled over in the woods for not reporting a turn.
