The 1981 Rugby Springboks, visiting New Zealand was marked by controversy there are many more on the legitimacy of the tour, and much debate has raged on this issue in both countries. Thirty years later it offers an opportunity to build bridges.

Claassen comments come in the wake of the huge debate in 1981 that eventually forced the New Zealand Rugby Union to apologize to Maori players deliberately failed to visit South Africa in 1928, 1949 and 1960 because of the policies of apartheid South Africa at the time.
